While different roofing materials share the same purpose, each of them has its own requirements. This includes the roof pitch. It must support the weight of the materials to ensure that the materials will deliver reliable performance throughout the years.
DryTech Roofing, your top source of quality roofing and James Hardie siding, discusses the recommended pitch ranges for popular roofing materials.
4/12 to 20/12 Pitches
Most residential home styles, including Colonial and Victorian-era, belong to this category. The commonly used roofing materials for these roof pitches include asphalt shingles. Three-tab shingles are the most well-known kind of shingle and the most versatile in adapting to roof pitches.
2.5/12 to 19/12 Pitches
We recommend clay or cement tiles for these roof slopes. For 2.5/12 to 4/12 roof pitches, you will need to install double underlayment to significantly improve leak resistance. Clay tiles are not ideal for pitches above 19/12 because they tend to shake on steep roofs.
When you’re upgrading your siding at the same time you’re installing clay tile roof, DryTech Roofing has got you covered. Our James Hardie plank siding comes in a wide array of options to give your home a fresh look and feel that will last for years.
25/12 to 3/12 Pitches
Roof pitches with lower angles are typically found in modern home styles and in industrial buildings. Roofing membranes work best on these architectural styles. There are several roofing options for flat and low-slope roofs, including:
- EPDM – Short for ethylene propylene diene monomer, EPDM is a synthetic rubber membrane made from recycled materials, making it an eco-friendly choice. It is naturally flexible, which means it allows for your home’s movement and setting. It can last up to 50 years.
- Built-Up Roofing – Also known as “tar and gravel” roofing, it consists of alternating layers of bitumen, asphalt or other adhesives. It’s an excellent option for dealing with high foot traffic and heavy impacts.
- Standing Seam Metal – It is made from panels of steel or aluminum linked together in raised seams. While they perform well for low-slope roofs, they can also be used on steeper roofs.
